Remember the house that, as a kid, you always wanted to hang out at? What did it have that made that house so enjoyable? Probably, there was always something to do, great snacks, and lots of friends. If you want to have the same kind of house for your kids, you’ll need more than a lawn. Let’s take a look at some exciting ideas:

1. Pool

Having a pool in your backyard will attract more than just the neighborhood. You will be hosting many pool parties for months and months during the warm weather. So, get ready. If this is something you want to invest in, call in the contractors. There is a very wide range of prices and amenities, so shop around. You may be surprised how affordable it can be.

2. Trampoline

Gone are the days of the dangerous trampolines. They new models are actually in-ground contraptions that are fun and so much safer. It’s amazing how much fun it can be to simply jump up and down. Kids gravitate to this type of entertainment and parents like the energy it burns off.

3. Splish Splash Pad

Originally designed for public spaces, the installation is now affordable enough for homeowners. Water splashes, bubbles, squirts and sprays out of all sorts of spigots and faucets for hours of fun. They are built to play in and around and keep kids running and playing for hours.

4. Sports Court

A simple basketball hoop attached to the garage used to be enough to the keep the kids busy. Today, however, many homeowner’s associations do not even allow them. Enter the sports court. This is exactly what it sounds like; a unit made of several sports components. Think of a jungle gym only instead of swings and monkey bars you have a court for basketball, tennis, volley ball, or even roller hockey.

5. Putting Green

With a little imagination and some greens, either real or artificial, you can put to your heart’s content. You can buy prefabricated putting greens that are ready to install, or you can design your own. This bit of backyard fun is relatively inexpensive and, who knows, it could be the beginning of an entire miniature golf course right at home.

6. Tennis Or Racquet Ball

Maybe you don’t have the room or the finances to install a regulation size tennis court or racquet ball court, but with a little imagination you can probably string a net where you could volley a ball back and forth or hit the ball up against a tall wall or fence built for this purpose in mind.

7. Bike Path

Even a small yard can benefit from a paved, winding bike path along the perimeter. Kids get to enjoy their wheels in a safe, contained area. It’s especially nice for toddlers just learning to ride their tricycles and training wheel bikes. Parents can enjoy teaching their little ones to learn how to ride away from the dangers of vehicles.

8. Fort-Treehouse-Playhouse

Every kid loves a home away from home in the backyard. Parents love them, too. No matter what you call it, a separate space out in the backyard, away from the grown-ups is a wonderful draw to your house. Keep the construction simple and sturdy, and provide a few comforts, and your kids and their friends will find this backyard haven to be one of their favorites.

9. Backyard Movie Theatre

This is a great trend that is enjoyed by all ages. On a balmy evening in your backyard, turn off the lights and turn on the movie. You can build a movie theatre several ways. Hang a white sheet on the side of the house and use a projecting DVD player to show the movie. You can have a permanent white wall painted on the side of your garage or a fence. Portable inflatable movie theaters are also available, which include the screen and a place for the projector to sit. There are also now weather resistant flat-screen televisions that you could show movies on. Any way you do it, set up some comfortable seating, get the popcorn popping, and watch the seats fill up fast.

10. Rock Climbing Wall

A trend that is sweeping playgrounds everywhere is now available in backyard sizes. These can be free-standing models or built in. Find a contractor who can help you plan for your particular backyard space. You’ll need a properly cushioned floor and a sturdy surface, then the design is up to you. There are a variety of fun climbing wall components that look authentic or are brightly colored.

11. Snack Kitchen

This can be as simple as a refrigerator and freezer that is convenient to your backyard playground, or as complicated as a soda fountain set up. If you can steal a little space inside your garage side entrance door, frame it off and put in a snack bar that’s kid size, complete with mini fridge for drinks, freezer for popsicles, and a few containers of snacks that are ready to grab and go. Add a couple stools and a counter or table and chairs for the kids to sit and relax for a moment before getting back to their games outside. If the kids are older, include a pizza oven for a real treat.

12. Secret Garden

Everyone loves the concept of a hidden garden within the confines of a backyard. Create the mysterious garden by closing it off behind some shrubs or a trellis covered in vines. Be sure to have little niches filled with bird baths, garden fairies, gnomes, tiny chairs and tables, or anything else that is surprising and fun.

You’ve got it all just the way you want it; the perfect landscaping with an expanse of manicured lawn and precisely placed boulders, a spacious back deck with room for a seating area and dining. Everything about the exterior of your home is welcoming and inviting. Everything, that is, except your driveway. Your driveway is like Cinderella; it does all the hard work and everyone else gets dressed up for the ball. Your driveway deserves just as much attention as the rest of your house, doesn’t it? Here are some ideas to get your driveway properly attired:

1. Stamped Concrete

This is a popular choice. If you are working with new construction or need a new driveway, investigate stamped concrete. Itís only slightly more expensive than asphalt but looks like a million bucks. In fact, the possibilities are almost limitless. You can stamp out any design, pattern or color that you can think of for the look of high-end stone but with the price and durability of plain old concrete.

2. Fancy Edging

What if you have a driveway that is in good working condition? It doesnít make sense to tear it out and waste all that money. Plus, that is a lot of square footage to cover with an expensive material. Another easy way to dress things up is to edge the driveway with a border in the high-end material of your choice, bricks, stones, stamped concrete. It looks great and no one will ever guess that you did it to save money.

3. Cobblestone

Everyone has at least seen most of the material choices, bricks pavers, stamped concrete, and natural stone. The newest (really, the oldest) kid on the block is cobblestone. In fact, cobblestone has been around for centuries. But, relax; you are not really buying centuries old cobblestone. The stones are actually cast-concrete, complete with rough edges to look old, weathered and amazing. They are laid just like any other paver, but have a classic look.

4. Stained Concrete

Applying stain to existing concrete is a great solution for hiding flaws and dressing up the look of our driveway without the investment of re-paving with a luxury material. Concrete is extremely porous and takes the application of acid-based stains well. In fact, unlike paint, it does not sit on the surface. The stain soaks in as a permanent addition. It wonít flake off. Creative installers can give the illusion of stone or pavers with the use of various stains and by cutting shallow grooves in the concrete.

5. Apron Facelift

If all of the above is too large of a financial investment, donít worry. There are ways to sneak your driveway into the ball before the clock strikes midnight. The answer is an apron. No, not that kind of apron. You can have just the front portion of your driveway, where it meets the street, paved with either brick or cobblestone. You still have a gorgeous entrance and a driveway befitting the rest of your home, just at a much reduced cost.

With just these few suggestions for dressing up your driveway, you can have a fairy tale entrance pretty enough to attend the ball with the rest of the house.

Your home should be a sanctuary, and your backyard should be an oasis. You work hard and should be able to come home after a long day and relax in comfort. But, for all their comfortable accoutrements, the modern backyard haven won’t be enjoyable if you can’t temper the climate and other natural forces. If you have all the basic necessities for relaxing and want to make your retreat even more livable, take a look at what you can do:

1. Misting System

These work best in low humidity climates but are still valuable anywhere itís too hot. A misting system sends out a vapor mist that cools the surrounding air a few degrees, similar to the mist from a waterfall. Used in conjunction with an exterior ceiling fan, this type of cooling system can really make a difference.

2. Heaters in the Backyard

Utilizing heaters in your outdoor design lets you extend your enjoyment well into the fall and open things up earlier in the spring. You can now find a large variety of free-standing heaters specifically made for patio and pool areas. Also look for built-in versions and compare pricing. If you have a beautiful backyard and can only enjoy it three or four months out of the year, the investment may be worth it.

3. Bug Misting System

This may be one of the best inventions ever. Instead of running around lighting citronella candles and spraying guests down with bug spray, maybe it’s time you considered investing in a bug misting system. Basically, small misters are strategically placed throughout the yard, in planting beds, near the pool, or next to the porch. The mechanism sprays an all-natural bug repellent that works on flies, bees, and even those annoying mosquitoes.

4. Shade Sails

We dream for the warm summer sun all winter, and when it finally arrives, we remember that it can be hot. Shade sails are a great, contemporary way to bring a little shade into your outdoor life. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors and are made of weather-resistant materials. A few areas of shade are always welcomed the deeper we get into the summer heat.

5. Pergola

For a more classic shade solution, build a traditional pergola. You can find pre-fabricated pergolas available or there are often craftsman looking for just such a project. The structure creates a romantic, dappled shade formed by the frame work and climbing vines. You can even drape flowing curtains from the support posts to add to the ambiance.

6. Cozy Seating

Move beyond the folding lawn chair. Instead, design dining and living areas in your outdoor space with comfortable seating just like you do indoors. A comfortable sofa and chairs pulled up close to an outdoor fireplace or fire pot would be welcomed by all. Think about including a chaise lounge or small daybed tucked away in a shady corner for lazy afternoon naps.

Putting a few chairs and tables next to the pool or on the patio is not the same as making your outdoor area comfortable. Think of your outdoor area the same as you do your home. After all, the square footage you enjoy outside should be as important as the square footage inside.

It used to be that almost every home had a simple fire pit built in the backyard. It was never anything that fancy, usually a circle of bricks or stones where a small campfire could be built. You could pull up a chair, roast a marshmallow, and maybe even tell a few ghost stories. Today, it may not be feasible to dig a hole in your backyard and build a campfire. You may have to get a bit more creative to relive those warm memories. Let’s look at a few interesting new ways to add a fire feature to your yard:

1. Wood Fire Pit

If possible, the old fashioned campfire pit may be just the thing for you. They add a nostalgic or retro look for your backyard area. Of course, you’ll want to upgrade it for your home, including new building materials and safety features, including stand-alone pits with screened domes. There are tons of DIY articles and videos online that can help you learn more. Before you begin, be sure to check if your municipality or homeowner’s association allows an open fire.

2. Lava-Ceramic-Glass

In lieu of wood logs, you can now find fire pits that have lava stones, ceramic beads and even glass chips in the center. This popular look is very modern and growing in popularity. The glass even comes in a variety of colors to complement the rest of your outdoor decor. You can choose a fire feature in any number of vessels, from bowls and troughs to torches and tables. Because of the alternative ‘fire’ methods, the vessels are limitless.

3. Flame Pots

These pots or bowls are a popular choice for lining a walkway or creating a romantic vibe next to the pool. As the sun sets, light the little flames and set the scene for the rest of the evening. Just a few pots strategically placed around your backyard oasis can change the mood dramatically. These pots come in a very large variety of sizes and shapes. They typically use a gel or liquid fuel made specifically to not smoke or smudge. You’ll find some that just look like rocks on fire and others that are very shiny and modern. Choose whatever suits your decor.

4. Tiki Torches

This is another backyard feature that has been rediscovered and redesigned over the years. The classic tiki at the Hawaiian luau is one type, yes, but there are many others to choose from now. You’ll find this island favorite has gone through a transformation recently and you can now find sleek metal torches in a variety of styles. A convenience factor has been added too. Some styles can be built-in with an underground gas supply, with timers and remotes, as well. Of course, the old style may suit your decor and by all means use them if you wish.

5. Free-Standing Fireplace

If your backyard oasis has more of a traditional design, a popular trend is to build a traditional, free-standing fireplace, surrounded by comfortable furniture and creating an outdoor living room. In fact, magazines frequently feature gorgeous outdoor rooms complete with a chandelier and a stone fireplace. The fireplace could be an old pueblo beehive, a stone Tuscan beauty, or a magnificent marble creation.

6. Coffee Table Fire

There are even some very unique fire features that include coffee tables with miniature fire pits in the center, in a variety of shapes and styles. You’ll find square coffee tables with a square center fire pit, rectangular tables with long troughs of flames for a very modern design, and even fire ìonî water right in the center of the table.

The old dirt fire pit in the back yard, lined with stones dragged up from the river, is definitely one possibility. But, there are so many more to consider now. The unique combination of materials that you can surround a flame with are almost limitless.

There are plenty of places to start looking at ideas and products that are perfect for the backyard bonfires. Here are some of our favorites:

Outdoor kitchens are the new must-have in outdoor decor but what makes it go right up and over-the-top? A little charcoal grill sitting on a slab of cement just doesn’t do it anymore. Picture your dream kitchen in your house and use your imagination to figuratively tear down the walls. Let’s take a look at what you might create:

1. Man-Size Grill

Show a man a barbecue grill catalog and you might as well quit talking because he probably won’t hear much else that you have to say. There is something ingrained in a man who grills that makes them want the biggest, most fantastic “make-your-neighbor-jealous” grill known to man. Shop around for the best features and match them to the best price. There are a wide range of options, so keep shopping until you find the one that’s right for you.

2. Pizza Oven

Custom built pizza ovens are becoming more and more available to the cook-out aficionados. Many of these are gorgeous, some coming direct from Italy. They make such amazing creations that you can expect all your neighbors will be hanging over the backyard fence, begging for an invitation. Throw away that pizza delivery number.

3. Refrigerator Pub

A fridge is an essential component to an outdoor kitchen. So how do you make this an over-the-top item in an outdoor kitchen? By adding a beer tap and turning a simple refrigerator into a pub. Also, outfit the entire refrigerator with dispensers for a variety of beverages and snacks.

4. Fireplace

Nothing adds ambiance to an evening in your backyard like an outdoor fireplace. You, your family, and your guests are bound to enjoy time spent in a comfortable chair by the fire staying cozy and warm. Specially designed gas fireplaces make enjoying the flames safe and efficient, too.

5. Dining Space

What is an outdoor kitchen without an outdoor dining room? Hang a chandelier that is filled with real candles and some comfortable dining chairs that encourage people to linger. Enjoy everything that a summer evening has to offer in the comfort of a specially designed outdoor dining area.

6. Sink

If you are going to the trouble of designing an outdoor kitchen, make sure you incorporate an outdoor sink. Just about any sturdy sink will do, just make sure it’s a big sink. Most people who grill know the value of a large deep sink to soak grilling equipment, racks, and all the works.

7. Roasting Spit

This cooking set up is a favorite for many families who love to entertain in a big way. Think Hawaiian luau with a pig roasting slowly over a fire. Many festivals feature roasting spits, so why not treat your own backyard like a festival? But remember; when the aromas waft through the neighborhood, you’ll have perhaps more guests than you intended.

8. Premium Finishes

A plain slab of cement under your feet does not make an oasis. Now with gorgeous stone and granite so readily available, you can lavishly finish all your backyard surfaces. And don’t just limit these finishes to the floor. Counters, fireplace hearths, and even tables and benches are the perfect places to make a statement with fancy finishes.

9. Wine Bar

When you see modern kitchen designs today in glossy magazines, you most likely see a wine bar included. You can do the very same thing in an outdoor kitchen, with a few adjustments for the weather, of course. When the conversation is flowing, you don’t want to stop it with a trip inside for another bottle of wine. Keep it handy right there in your backyard kitchen.

10. Built-in Wok

If you like to stir-fry in a wok, you know how much heat and steam, and sometimes smoke, they can cause. Moving this method of cooking outside is a great way to really enjoy your wok cooked meals without steaming up the indoors. And there’s nothing like serving up perfectly seasoned veggies and seafood under the stars.

11. Herb Garden

Every gourmet cook knows an herb garden in close proximity to their outdoor kitchen is a must. Being able to wash and chop fresh herbs within seconds of picking would be a dream come true. Pick a good spot according to the herb’s growing needs. If you don’t have a garden spot in the ground, plant interesting containers. This is a good food item as well as a beautiful decoration.

12. Smoker

Not just for southern barbecues anymore, a smoker, either built-in or portable, is another fabulous over-the-top feature in an outdoor kitchen. You’ll find plenty of recipes to smoke your own foods in the comfort of your own backyard.

If cooking in the great outdoors is something you really enjoy, why not give your backyard a fancy facelift. With even one of these additions, you can be the gourmet chef that you’ve always wanted, right in your own backyard.

Every week we are posting the story behind the members of the Legacy Builder’s family. This week we would like to put a spotlight on Dan Ladd, the Managing Director of Legacy Builders. Dan has a lifetime of experience in residential development, home building and remodeling.

As a third generation builder from McHenry County, he has a unique blend of skills in all aspects of construction. The family began as production oriented builders of affordable homes in subdivisions such as Coventry and Four Colonies in Crystal Lake. They progressed to more custom developments in the county north of town in the Squaw Creek Valley, Cherry Hill, and Bull Ridge communities.

Dan then followed the progression of more upscale custom homes and remodeling in today’s environment of high levels of customization and customer integration. Dan’s background is a perfect fit to complete our company vision at Legacy Builders.

Ever so often, we have clients and vendors ask us, “what is the story behind Legacy Builders?” Well, during the 80’s and 90’s, Jim and his brother, Thomas Geiger, built more than 35 spec homes on lots that they owned. The majority of these homes were under contract to buyers before they were even finished, a testament to the brother’s dedication to quality workmanship and forward-thinking designs. When the economy got soft, Jim and Thomas switched their strategy, turning distressed and/or auctioned properties into desirable homes that sold quickly.

Fast forward about fifteen years, they dreamt of a new business venture. Their vision was to create a building company that placed emphasis on quality workmanship and creative, modern designs. They also planned to purchase and renovate homes for rentals to sustain the company through lean times. However, on May 31st, 2011, Thomas passed away. In 2012, with the support and assistance of several good friends and trusted business partners, Jim realized the brothers’ dream and created Legacy Builders.

We handle jobs of all sizes at Legacy Builders. Today finds us at a Crystal Lake home that is currently up for sale, doing a repair to the bay window. Repairs like these add salability to a home, often making the difference between selling the home in short order or having it sit on the market for an extended period of time. The defects of a home are often what a potential buyer will remember, and may lead them to suspect that there may be other, similar damage to other areas of the house. Fixing this leaky bay window is a relatively inexpensive way to help ensure that this home’s first impression on potential buyers will be a good one.

In this photo, Contractor James Greenwell removes the damaged wood and any old caulking around the bay window. The wet insulation will also be removed, as it is wet from the recent heavy rains we have, and replaced with new high R-Value insulation.
